Day 57, Valdez

I guess I shouldn’t have griped about the ice cream truck coming by at 7:30am yesterday cause this morning it came by at 7am.  Got a picture of the little devil though.

We went by the Valdez Glacier today.  It isn’t accessible like some of the Glaciers we have seen.  Maybe we are just getting picky or something.

I guess the highlight of our day was going to watch the Sea Lions feasting on the salmon at the fish hatchery about a mile down the road from us.  The hatchery releases the baby salmon in the millions and they end up out at sea but every year they attempt to return to their release point to spawn (lay eggs).  The rate of actual return varies from 2 to 10% depending on the species of salmon.  What we watched was the Sea Lions devouring as many salmon at high tide as they can.  This picture shows a Sea Lion and if you look close you will see the fish all around it.

There was also reported to be a mother bear and 3 cubs in the area last night but we didn’t see them this evening.

We have no idea why but there are at least 18 fishing boats anchored right in front of the RVs.  They have been out there for about 4 hours now.

Tomorrow morning we leave Valdez go North and then East heading for Haines, Alaska.  We expect to get there on the 21st of July and will be loading on the ferry the 25th.

Thought you might want to see last nights sunset over the mountains.
