We were awakened from a sound sleep this morning at 7:30 by the sound of the ice cream truck going by. Now who in the world would be eating ice cream at 7:30 in the morning. We got a call from Mattie some time after 8am saying they were headed into town to find a doctor for Gary. He had been running a fever for a couple of days but he was hoarse this morning and didn’t feel good so Mattie talked him into going to the doctor. They ended up doing a chest x-ray and said he had Pneumonia so he’s on an antibiotic.
While they were in town Twila and I decided we would walk down the handicapped access to the beach/fishing area. You talk about handicapped access!!!!!! It had a sign saying it was a 13 degree incline and it wasn’t even hard surfaced. I told Twila you would need a 4 wheel drive hover-round to use it. When you got to the bottom it was all rocks and the tide was out. I told Twila to be careful and I went first so I could give her a hand. Guess who fell down? Wasn’t Twila. I stepped on a rock and it was slick as snot. Luckily I was able to kind of roll as I went down and didn’t hurt anything but my pride. This is a picture from where we were at and the RVs above us.
This is a picture of the campground entrance with the bay and the mountains in the background.
After lunch we went into town and watched a video on the earthquake of 1964. The damage was unbelievable. They said the ocean floor dropped 50 feet and then came back up 30 feet. This caused the entire bay here at Valdez to go dry and then the water came rushing back with a wave about 30 feet high. The town was completely destroyed. The fault line went right through Anchorage and 4th street had areas with one side as much as 30 feet higher than the other side. We had read somewhere that it was a 9.2 earthquake which was the highest ever recorded in North America.
