Day 51, Hope, Alaska

Hope is a gold mining town.  It is located on the West side of the Turnagain Arm.  If you look at the map, Anchorage is up at the top of the Arm.  We drove down the East side of the Arm when we came through Anchorage, then we went to Whittier, Seward, and on down the Kenai Peninsula.  We went right by the road to Hope but after reading about it we decided to stop by on the way back.

Hope is a really small town.  There are 2 cafes and 1 gift shop.  The girls made it to the gift shop but didn’t buy anything.

There is also a RV Park at the end of town looking out over the Turnagain Arm.

We are staying at the National Forest Campground a little Northwest of Hope.  It is really pretty but is dry camping only.  Cost is $14 a day but with the Golden Age Passport it is half price.

There is still gold mining going on and most of the town and surrounding area is involved in the mining.  There is one big mine and then about 12 to 15 smaller operations.  One of the reasons we came to Hope is they have an area for recreational panning.  Gary had picked up a brochure in Soldotna that was published by the US Forest Service showing the locations and some instructions on how to best find the gold.  We drove out to the Resurrection Trail Head today to look around.  From the bridge over the creek it is OK to pan for gold for 1/2 mile upstream.
