Day 50, Same Song Second Verse

We’re still in Soldotna.  We went to Kenai to the farmer’s market.  It turned out to be more of a craft market than a farmer’s market.  There was one place that had some tomatoes but it was cold with a stiff wind and we didn’t stay long.  We went by a place called “Three Bears”.  It was sort of like a Sam’s without a need for a membership card.  I brought another gold pan.  I had read where they use what is called a Grizzly Pan to remove larger rocks and gravel.  It is a pan with 1/2” holes in the bottom.  You put the mud, sand and rocks into this pan with the regular gold pan under it.  By running water through the Grizzly pan you wash the sand, smaller gravel, and hopefully gold into the gold pan.  Then you look through the larger rocks and gravel to see if there is any gold in it and then work the smaller stuff in the gold pan.  It is suppose to save a lot of time.

We then went to a Russian Orthodox Church that is on the National Register for Historical Places.  Most of the items in the church had been removed since it is due to have a major restoring soon.  A retired priest  gave us a tour.  He had retired in 1991 but still volunteered to give tours.

This is a candelabra inside the church that was made in Russia in 1875.

The girls wanted a picture of what they called a Posies Tree.  It is a metal frame with flower pots hanging on the outside.

Tomorrow we are planning on going over to Hope, Alaska.  Hope is a gold mining town and there are some places where you can pan for gold on public land.  I don’t know how long we will be there, I guess it depends on whether we actually find any gold.
