Today we took a cruise on a sightseeing boat to the Kenai Fjords National Park. This is a must do. The weather had been predicted to be rainy earlier in the week but we booked anyway and got lucky. It wasn’t sunshiny but it only sprinkled occasionally. Are you starting to get tired of me saying everything is beautiful? Well, sorry, there is no other way to describe it. Maybe gorgeous would do but that sounds kind of sissy. We saw Stellar Sea Lions, Puffins, Sea Otters, a Bald Eagle, a Mountain Goat, Humpback Whales, and Dall Porpoises. No I never heard of a Dall Porpoise either. It is a black and white porpoise that is often mistaken for an Orca but it is only about 6 feet long. Sorry they are really fast and I didn’t get a picture. I did however get pictures of most of the others and pictures beat talking any day.
Oh, did I say it was beautiful??
We also went by a glacier that was much bigger than the Exit Glacier we went to yesterday. It is the Bear Glacier. I think they said it was 1 1/2 miles wide at the bottom and much bigger at the top.
We even went right up to the Holgate Glacier which ends in the sea. It moves at a rate of about 12 inches a day and the end of the glacier falls off into the sea. They call this “calving” and it is unbelievably loud when it happens which was several times while we were there.
The face of the glacier is about 600 feet high. See the dark area at the bottom center of the glacier, this is a close up of just that area.
OK, just a little silliness. Twila and I thought this looked like an Ice Sculpture. Maybe of a bear on it’s back with a porpoise jumping over it?
I did get a picture of a really cute bird.
The eagle is cute too.
