Day 46, Homer, Alaska

We drove into Homer today.  On the way we stopped at Anchor Point State Park and took a picture at the most westerly point on an unbroken road in North America.

Farest West Road

This is right on the coastline of the Cook Inlet.  There were several eagles down by the beach along with the sea gulls.

They don’t have a normal boat launch at this point due to the Inlet’s high tides so they use a tractor to launch the boats.  They just back the boat trailers into the ocean and let it float off and then run the boat back up on the trailer to load it.

We got to Homer about noon so of course we had to eat.  We went to a restaurant at the end of the Homer “Spit” called Land’s End.  The Homer Spit is a gravel bar that extends into the Inlet for about 5 miles.  It may have been caused by a glacier pushing up the gravel hundreds of years ago.  It probably would have disappeared years ago if man hadn’t decided to use it.  The cruise ships and the Alaska Ferry even have their pier built off it.  It is the main tourist area for Homer.  Homer and the Spit are right on the Cook Inlet.  These pictures were taken coming into Homer from a pullout over looking the Bay.

We saw this eagle sitting on a roof of a building and I wondered if maybe his mother had been a sea gull.

After lunch Twila and Mattie did a little looking around the shops.  I say looking around since I don’t think either one of them bought anything.  We then went to the Bear Creek Winery which is on the East side of mainland Homer.  The winery makes wines using mostly berries or fruits.  They do import some grapes from Italy and some from the lower 48 but even these are mixed with some berries.  We got some Blueberry, Peach Apricot, and some Blu Zin which is a Zinfandel wine with blueberries added.  This little guy was at the door.

This was the view off the porch that this little bear has to put up with everyday.
