Last night after I had already finished my blog, we drove up to the visitor’s center at Tok and took some pictures. A little hokey but fun.
We left Tok about 10am headed for Fairbanks. The road for the most part was very good. We ran into some construction and had to wait about 15 minutes for a pilot car to take us through one stretch of repair. I really tried hard not to put anymore pictures of mountains in for awhile but I didn’t quite make it.
We got to the visitor’s center in Delta Junction, Alaska about noon. They have a very nice facility. We had to do the usual picture since this is the official end of the Alaska Highway.
We also encountered the biggest mosquitoes we have seen yet. Twila made friends with them but I didn’t fair as well.
This is just what old people do.
We then headed over to the local “drive in” restaurant, although we walked over. It is just across from the visitor’s center. We had the best cheeseburger we have bought since we left home. Of course 2 cheeseburger, 1 fry, and 2 drinks was $17.50. Oh well, it’s just money and you can’t take it with you. Next to the drive in there was a Historical Museum called Sullivan’s Roadhouse. This is a good place to visit, very interesting, and it is free. Put it on your list to do.
We are now parked at the Fred Meyers Store in Fairbanks. We plan on staying here 2 nights and then we will need to find someplace to park the RVs for 4 days while we take the “ice road” to Deadhorse, Alaska which is at the end of the road at Prudhoe Bay.
