We went to Fast Eddy’s for breakfast at 9am, good meal and lots of it. We then came back to the RV’s and got water and some snacks for the trip and headed for Chicken, Alaska. Chicken is about 75 miles from Tok. You have to back track 12 miles on the Alaska Highway and then go North on Highway 5. It is all blacktop with the usual frost heaves here and there until just 2 miles from Chicken. Then it turns to a dirt road that was muddy today as it was raining. Chicken was a gold town and now is mainly a tourist town. They were having their annual “Chickenstock”. Chickenstock is a music festival with country/western music. The weather wasn’t cooperating with them. It was cold with occasional rain and it was all outside. Admission was $20 so we skipped it. If I remember correctly Chicken has a summer population of 26 and a winter population of 6. They had a huge dredge which was used to remove the gold ore.
The Chickenstock was next to the Chicken Creek Outpost. They wanted $15 to pan for gold.
We went “downtown”, just another gift shop location, and they had free panning if you used their pan and put up a $5 deposit. I think they wanted you to just keep the pan since the other store was selling them for $4.95. Gary and I decided to try it since it was free and guess what? We got just what we had invested. Nada!!!! Well Gary had a couple of specks. This next picture I call chicken scratching. The chickens in the background are Gary and I panning for gold. The “chick” in the front is Mattie.
Chicken does have a post office and it is open Monday thru Friday but they only get mail twice a week.
